“Wet brain” is a blunt piece of slang for a serious medical condition. Doctors call it Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, and it describes brain damage caused by a severe deficiency of thiamine, also known as vitamin B1. It shows up most often in people with long-term heavy drinking, which is why the nickname stuck.

The condition is frequently misunderstood in two opposite directions. Some people assume it only affects those living on the street after decades of drinking. Others assume any memory lapse after a rough weekend is an early sign. Neither is accurate. Wet brain has a specific cause, a recognizable set of symptoms, and a treatment window that closes faster than most families realize. Stage One: Wernicke Encephalopathy

Personality changes, apathy, and difficulty with planning are common, and many people in this stage need long term supportive care rather than a standard rehab track.

Prognosis after Korsakoff syndrome varies widely. Classic long-term studies suggested that roughly one quarter of patients recovered substantially, about half improved to some degree, and about one quarter showed little improvement. What Wet Brain Is Not

However, urgently needed glucose should not be delayed, and current ASAM guidance permits thiamine and glucose to be given in either order or concurrently.

  • High-dose thiamine, often parenteral at first, followed by oral maintenance
