Does Inpatient Treatment Offer EMDR?

Inpatient treatment for mental health or substance use disorders offers a unique opportunity to immerse even more fully in all aspects of therapies you might also access in an outpatient program. The benefits of inpatient treatment are many, so that whatever therapies you engage in are likely to be amplified by the intense focus that is possible when you are in residence throughout your treatment or for some of it. Inpatient treatment services in Denver, Colorado, are available at Mile High Recovery Center. Evidence-based therapies, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), provided by experienced clinicians, help clients find wellness and sobriety every day.

Inpatient treatment with EMDR is one of the many options available at Mile High. Singularly effective when there has been any history of trauma, EMDR is one of the therapies you may benefit from if you are admitted to Mile High Recovery Center for inpatient treatment. How Does Inpatient Treatment Differ from Outpatient?

When you are living in a mental health and addiction treatment facility, your experience will be different from that of those who continue to live at home. Both outpatient and inpatient treatment has benefits, and they also share many characteristics, but there are some important differences in residential experiences.

When you are an inpatient, you will:

  • Experience a safe, trigger-free environment in which you can focus on your treatment
  • Be surrounded 24/7 by both professionals and peers who understand your experience
  • Have access to professional care round the clock, regardless of what comes up for you
  • Be able to immerse in therapies and treatments for more hours per week
  • Feel relieved of the worry and stress about outside responsibilities connected to family, work, or school – allowing more mental and emotional bandwidth for healing
  • Experience reassurance and safety when dealing with painful memories, for example, in EMDR treatment, because you are in a secure space, fully supported

Once you have committed to inpatient treatment, you can engage fully in more than one kind of therapy, including the highly effective, evidence-based EMDR.

Inpatient Treatment EMDR

How is EMDR incorporated into your inpatient rehab or mental health treatment experience? There are some free-standing five-day EMDR inpatient programs for the treatment of PTSD, but EMDR is also offered as one of the available therapies in an inpatient facility.

Any effective, evidence-based therapy is well-suited to inpatient care because the therapist and client have an opportunity to screen out the noise of daily life. In outpatient treatment, a client may find that EMDR treatment is spread out over weeks or months, whereas when a client is in residence, EMDR sessions can happen daily, as appropriate.

The eight phases of EMDR therapy include:

  1. Taking your history
  2. Review of the treatment plan
  3. Identifying the target memory for EMDR
  4. Desensitization to the target memory using bilateral eye movement
  5. Installation of positive belief to replace the negative one
  6. Body scan to ensure the memory has lost its intense power
  7. Wrap-up, with client processing the experience and also skills practice for handling any future negative experiences
  8. Confirmation and reevaluation, including the decision about whether to start over with a different memory

When you are doing EMDR inpatient treatment, you can move through the stages more quickly and, if needed, continue processing additional memories of different traumas.
